Precautions:

  1. Pregnant: Don’t take St. John’s wort if you’re pregnant. It’s been shown to increase the muscle tone of your uterus during pregnancy. This could cause an increased risk of miscarriage. It has also caused congenital (present at birth) conditions in animal studies.
  2. Breastfeeding: If you’re taking St. John’s wort and nursing, your baby may experience fussiness, colic and drowsiness.
  3. Taking certain medications: St. John’s wort interacts with many different drugs. The supplement may not be safe for you if you take certain prescription medications
  4. Having surgery: You shouldn’t take St. John’s wort within five days of any planned surgical procedures because of the risk of medication interactions.
  5. Serious skin reaction to sun exposure can occur: Therefore use of sun screen is advised together with staying away from direct sunlight.
  6. Alzheimer disease: St. John’s wort might make dementia worse in people with Alzheimer disease.
  7. Bipolar disorder: St. John’s wort can bring on mania in people with bipolar disorder, and can also speed up the cycling between depression and mania.
  8. Depression: In people with major depression, St. John’s wort might bring on mania, which can involve impulsive behavior.
  9. Schizophrenia: St. John’s wort might bring on psychosis in some people with schizophrenia.
  10. Surgery: St. John’s wort might affect serotonin levels in the brain, which could interfere with surgical procedures. Also, in people who have used St. John’s wort, using anesthesia may lead to serious heart complications during surgery. Stop using St. John’s wort at least two weeks before a scheduled surgery.
